Default Why political leaders treat common man as animals ?

MANDYA: It was with shock and disbelief that the eager masses of Mandya opened their bags of subsidized rice and wheat on Sunday: worms had got there first. Large crowds had gathered to avail of the state government's much-hyped scheme of supplying 50 kg of rice and wheat at cheap rates, to beat the price rise.

Worm-infested rice was doled out to the buyers, who promptly returned their bags to the authorities concerned. Food and civil supplies minister R Ashoka, who kicked off the scheme here, had to beat a hasty retreat after he was confronted with the poor quality rice.

A retired school teacher, who purchased 50 kg of rice, rushed to the dais as the launch function was still on and showed the minister the condition of the foodgrains. An embarrassed Ashoka asked the department officials to ensure that quality rice was supplied. The grand scheme, announced by the minister last week, was launched state-wide from Mandya: anyone could avail of 50 kg of rice and wheat once in six months. Rice was priced at Rs 13 per kg and wheat at Rs 9.20 per kg.
Not convinced that poor quality rice could have been doled out to the buyers, Ashoka chose to take mediapersons to the godown where rice was stocked. When journalists inspected the bags and drew his attention to worms running riot inside, the minister asked them to appreciate the motive behind the scheme rather than highlight the substandard quality.
