it is extremely rare and around 100 such cases have been reported around the world.
the most accepted explanation is that one of the twins (developing from the same zygote, ie the ovum fused with a single spermatozoon) during very early days gets surrounded by the dividing cells of the twin and develops as a parasite, inside the abdominal cavity of the twin (rohit, it is not in the womb where this grows, but inside the abdominal cavity). even then, limb buds and vertebra may be the only ones to develop. no functional heart, brain, lungs, bowels develop.
ie, it is not a complete or a real fetus.
certain tumors can give rise to this appearance, called teratomas where formed elements can be found like nails, hair, teeth etc. but the presence of a vertebral column is generally thought to exclude this condition.
rmvk, as you rightly said, for practical purposes, this is a tumor.
ashaan, the images provided appear authentic too. the x-ray shows the 'fetal' bones in the right half of the abdominal cavity of the baby with the bowel shadow on the left side (dark, air - filled). the ultrasonogram too reveals 'fetal' vertebral colum, leg bones, poorly formed brain, apart from the baby's bowels, liver, left kidney and vertebra.

Mumbai: Bollywood actress Neetu Chandra has denied having any links with Pakistani bowler Mohammad Asif, embroiled in the latest spot-fixing controversy that has rocked the world cricket.

Chandra, who found her name being dragged in the spot-fixing scandal, today in a statement, read out by her publicist Dale Bhagwagar, denied having any connection with the ongoing controversy or tainted cricketer Asif. "Neetu personally doesn�t know Mohammad Asif or any other Pakistani cricketer. Her name is unnecessarily being dragged in this whole match-fixing episode. These are unfounded allegations," said Bhagwagar.

On Sunday evening, some TV channels broke the news that a leaked document prepared by Interpol and Scotland Yard for the Pakistan Cricket Board has a call log of all the people who called Mohammad Asif in 2009. The channels claimed that the only number from Mumbai found in that log belongs to Neetu.

They also reported that two short calls were exchanged between Chandra and Asif on the night of November 7 last year. "The controversy began when a section of the media leaked a document claiming to be prepared by Interpol and Scotland Yard for the PCB. Apparently this document contains various phone numbers of people who interacted with Asif in 2009.

"The media reported that the only mobile number from Mumbai belongs to Chandra and insinuated that she could be involved in the infamous match-fixing scandal. "The channels claimed that both the numbers exchanged few SMSes discussing sensitive cricket issues and deals. Neetu has termed all the allegations as frivolous and incorrect. She has no connection with Asif," Bhagwagar said.

Yesterday, reports from Pakistan suggested that Chandra has been questioned by the International Cricket Council�s anti-corruption and security unit regarding her alleged links with Asif in the spot-fixing scandal. Reports also said that Neetu had also been questioned by the ICC officials. "She was never interrogated by the ICC. Interrogation by ICC�s anti-corruption and security unit was never done. These all are incorrect and baseless allegations," Bhagwagar added.

NIA to submit report on Thachankary�s Qatar visit

New Delhi: Central probe agency NIA will soon be submitting its report about the alleged association of a Kerala IPS officer with certain people having terror links whom he had met during his Qatar visit earlier this year. The National Investigation Agency (NIA), which has been assigned to look into the matter by the Centre, will soon be filing its report after recording the statement of the Indian Ambassador to Qatar, Deepa Gopalan Wadhwa, official sources said.

The Centre had ordered through investigations after it received a report from its Qatar mission as well as from other security agencies about the alleged misconduct of Inspector General of Police Tomin J Thachankary. According to reports, Thachankary, a 1987 batch IPS officer, had allegedly met some persons in Qatar who are said to have terror links. The charges were, however, refuted by the officer. The reports had claimed that Thachankary met some Keralites allegedly having terror links in the Gulf and offered to help them return to their home state.

The External Affairs Ministry had passed on this information to the Home Ministry which had asked the state government to carry-out investigations in the matter. Thachankary was suspended when he was IG (Kannur) some months back for making a foreign trip allegedly without government permission in violation of the service rules. Earlier also, he was suspended following a case relating to amassing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income. However, he was re-instated following a High Court order as the vigilance probe in the case kept dragging on.
